TEDDINGTON SCULLS Instructions and Start Order

27th March 2004.

10.30am at Hampton Court

Dittons Skiff and Punting Club to the RCC jetty.

Car parking is limited; trailers should be parked in the public car park in Trowlock Way. It may be necessary to remove cars to Broom Road.

Numbers will be issued from 0800 at RCC and should be displayed on the port/strokeside of the boat and on racing strip. IF YOUR NUMBER IS NOT VISIBLE, YOU WILL NOT BE TIMED.

BOATING.

NB FOR THOSE UNFAMILAR WITH THIS REACH, MIDDLESEX IS THE TEDDINGTON/HAMPTON SIDE (ON THE SCULLERS’ RIGHT HAND/PORT SIDE WHEN RACING) SURREY IS THE KINGSTON TOWN/THAMES DITTON SIDE (ON THE SCULLERS’ LEFT HAND/STARBOARD SIDE WHEN RACING)

Boats may be launched either at RCC or via Tamesis Sailing Club. Given limited space, 8x and 4x should launch from Tamesis, 2x + 1x from either.

PROCEEDING TO THE START

You should allow 45min to paddle to the start, longer for J14 and younger crews and if there is a head wind.

Competitors going upstream should keep close to the Middlesex (Teddington) side, and pass on that side of Ravens Ait. Great care must be taken around Dittons Bend, particularly by 1x + 2x who may be arriving after the 4x + 8x have started; buoys will be placed to divide the upstream navigation channel on Middx from the racing channel on Surrey.

MARSHALLING

IT WOULD BE MOST HELPFUL IF COACHES WOULD MAKE SURE THEIR CREWS, PARTICULARLY THE LESS EXPERIENCED ONES, KNOW WHERE THEY ARE SUPPOSED TO BE AND WHEN.

8x, 4x and 2x

These boats will marshal on Surrey. Singles on Middlesex. The lowest numbers upstream, with nos1/2 just below the River Mole, others in numerical order below. All boats should remain with their bows pointing upstream until told to turn.

ALL SHOULD BE IN POSITION BY 1020

1x

All will marshal on Middlesex.

ALL SHOULD BE IN POSITION BY 10.40

Latecomers will only be allowed to overtake others to reach their positions at the discretion of the marshals. They may be held back and started after those who have arrived on time.

MARSHALLS WILL ASSIST IN POSITIONING CREWS. ANY CREW NOT FOLLOWING THE DIRECTIONS OF MARSHALLS WILL BE PENALIZED, OR RELEGATED TO THE BACK, OR DISQUALIFED.

Particularly after the race has started, crews must keep close to the bank to avoid obstructing those proceeding downstream.

THE START

At 1025 a klaxon will sound and nos. 1 + 2 will be instructed to paddle up and turn round marker buoys towards the centre of the river, and proceed down towards the start, followed by nos. 3+ 4 etc. Approximately 2 lengths of clear water should be left between boats paddling down to the start.

After the 8x and 4x have started, there will be a gap of approximately 1min., when the 2x will start followed by another gap of 1 minute when the 1x will start.

A few strokes before the timing line, crews will be told "no …. GO"

THE RACE

The racing line follows the centre of the river, passing on the Surrey side of Raven’s Ait, through the centre or Surrey arches of Kingston road and rail bridges and to the Middlesex side of Steven’s Ait.

Buoys will be placed on Dittons bend and alongside Stevens Ait – THE RACING LINE IS TO THE SURREY SIDE OF THESE BUOYS – THE CHANNEL LEFT ON THE MIDDLESEX SIDE IS FOR UPSTREAM NAVIGATION.

A crew being overtaken may hold its best course but should not impede overtaking boat. IT IS THE DUTY OF THE OVERTAKING BOAT TO KEEP CLEAR OF THE OVERTAKEN. Particular care should be taken alongside Raven’s Ait where the channel is of restricted width.

Safety:- do not overtake alongside Raven’s Ait or through the bridges.

THE FINISH

On reaching the finish, crews should not stop immediately but keep paddling until well clear of the finish area, under direction of marshals.

Crews returning to RCC or further upstream should turn on to Middlesex; only those returning to KRC should turn on to Surrey.

On proceeding upstream, take care not to obstruct competitors still racing. Any crew seen to do so will be penalized or disqualified.

RESULTS

Results will be issued as soon as possible after the last competitor has finished.

Meanwhile, refreshments will be available in the clubroom.
